April 17 Amanda Adair TPWD/Master Naturalist
Amanda is a TPWD ranger at Village Creek State Park and director of the area Texas Master Naturalist group. She will share information about hiking and camping in the area and survival techniques.
May 15 Christine Sliva and Jim Armacost
Jim Armacost is Assistant Professor of Biology at Lamar University. He's been a birder since he was a teenager, and following his passion for birds led me to a career in biology and has given me the opportunity to study birds throughout the United States, as well as in Japan and Peru. After receiving a B.S. in zoology from Louisiana State University and a M.S. in biology from Mississippi State University, he conducted research on birds in the Peruvian Amazon for my Ph.D. in biology from Illinois State University. He teaches ornithology and conservation biology, among other topics. He and his graduate students study many aspects of avian ecology and conservation in southeast Texas. He is the current president of the Golden Triangle Audubon Society.
Christine is a native of Southeast Texas. She has been intrigued with birds every since she can remember. She joined the local Audubon Society to increase her knowledge of local and migratory birds as well as help enhance her birding skills. She participates with Spring and Fall Migration bird counts, as well as local monthly field trips organized and led by the GTAS. She is a member of the Board of Directors and is serving as the current Treasurer for the Golden Triangle Audubon Society.
June 19 Maxine Johnson Big Thicket Association
Maxine was a key figure in the forming of the Big Thicket Nat’l Preserve. She served as president of the Big Thicket Association 1973-75 and 1994-98 and is a member of the Sierra Club. She will talk about the Big Thicket Now and Then.
July 17 Wendy Ledbetter
Ms. Ledbetter is currently serving as the Big Thicket Project Director for The Nature Conservancy. She has served on the planning committees for the 1996, 1999 and 2003 Big Thicket Science Conferences. She is a co-author of several publications. Her interests include longleaf pine ecosystem restoration, rare plant conservation and native plants.
Aug 21 Kim Cessac and Chris LNVA
The Lower Neches Valley Authority was created when the Texas Legislature passed a Comprehensive Act in 1933. As a water conservation and reclamation district, Lower Neches Valley Authority is a non-profit agency of the State of Texas with no power to levy or collect taxes of any kind. The Authority is funded by revenue from the sale of both raw and treated water to municipal, industrial and agricultural customers.
The Lower Neches Valley Authority is the local sponsor for three Corps of Engineers projects: Sam Rayburn Reservoir, B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir, and the Neches River Saltwater Barrier. The Authority also operates the North Regional Treatment Plant for industrial waste treatment, and the West Regional Water Treatment System for the production and distribution of potable water.
